Pain management physician

Conservative pain management that treats the cause, with real options for the chronic cases that rest, pills and stretching never resolved.

Locations

Rehab Lab provides conservative, non-opioid pain management at our Wauwatosa and Appleton clinics. The focus is persistent pain: the back that has flared for years, the tendon that never settled, the headache that keeps returning, and the cases where imaging came back unremarkable and nobody could explain why it still hurts.

We do not prescribe pain medication, and we are not a substitute for your physician on that. What we offer is the conservative half: find the mechanical cause, treat it hands-on, load the tissue back to tolerance, and use shockwave and Class IV laser for the degenerative cases where hands alone are not enough.

Why pain persists after the tissue has healed

Pain is not a simple readout of tissue damage. When a pain system stays sensitized after an injury has healed, it becomes better at producing pain from less provocation, which is a real physical process rather than something imagined. It is also why a scan showing nothing wrong does not mean nothing is wrong.

That changes the treatment. Graded, tolerable movement is one of the most effective interventions available for persistent pain, and the skill is finding the dose your system accepts today and progressing it. Flares along the way are expected and do not mean lost ground, which is worth knowing before the first one arrives.

Options when rest and medication have run out

Chronic tendon problems do not respond to rest, because tendons lose capacity without load and the pain returns the moment you resume. They respond to progressive loading, and to shockwave therapy, which provokes a repair response in tissue that has stopped remodeling on its own. Degenerative joints respond to restored motion above and below, offloading, and genuine strength around the joint.

For the cases in between we have dry needling for muscles that will not release, ARP neuro therapy for muscles that will not switch on after an injury, and Class IV laser for deep inflammation. None of these is a cure sold on its own; they make the loading work possible.

How this differs from our other categories

This page is about persistent pain and the conservative options for it. If your problem is a recent sports injury, start with the sports medicine clinic. If you want the credential behind the diagnosis, see sports medicine physician. If you are rebuilding after surgery, physical rehabilitation is the closer fit.

We will also tell you when conservative care is not the answer, including when a case needs an interventional pain specialist, a surgeon or a physician managing medication.

Pain management physician questions

Common questions about pain management physician

Do you prescribe pain medication?

No. Medication decisions belong with your physician, and we would not ask you to change a prescription. What many patients find is that they reach for it less often as function improves, which is a conversation to have with whoever prescribed it.

My scans came back clear but I am still in pain. What now?

That is common and it does not mean nothing is wrong. Plenty of genuinely limiting problems, weakness, poor load tolerance, lost motion and a sensitized pain system, are invisible on imaging. A movement examination looks at what a scan cannot, which is what your body can actually do.

Will treatment flare my pain up?

Occasionally, mildly, and it is planned for. A flare usually means the load outran your current tolerance rather than that damage was done, and we adjust the dose. Knowing that in advance genuinely changes how people respond to it.

How long does chronic pain treatment take?

Longer than acute care, and we would rather say so. Meaningful change usually takes eight to twelve weeks of consistent work, and we track function, what you can do, alongside the pain score, because the two do not always move together.

I have tried everything. Why would this be different?

Often because the previous care treated the painful area rather than the cause, or stopped at passive treatment with no loading. We will assess it properly and tell you honestly whether we think we can help, including when the answer is that we cannot.

Is shockwave or laser covered by insurance?

Frequently not, so ask us for the real number before you start a course. Our front desk prices it up front rather than billing you into a surprise at visit four. Get in touch and tell them what we would be treating.
